Feasibility Studies & Ecological Appraisal
|
Ecological feasibility assessments (sometimes referred to as site appraisals) are a useful tool, providing developers with a clear idea of the ecological issues they are likely to encounter on a project. We strongly advise involving an ecologist at the initial stage of a project, so that any important ecological issues are identified and evaluated. This will allow any ecological works that are necessary to be incorporated into the development design at an early stage, avoiding delays later on. We recommend two components to a good ecological appraisal a site visit and a desk study. |
|
The site visit provides information on the habitats present, and allows an evaluation of the potential for a site to support protected species. The desk study involves a data search to provide background information on species present, and is often recommended or required by local planning authorities. The size of the data search area will vary depending on the nature of the proposal.
Feasibility Assessment Services
- Initial site visit
- Desk study
- Phase 1 habitat survey
- Initial consultations
- Feasibility report
- Recommendation for next steps
Project Examples
- Feasibility assessments for multiple wind energy developments throughout England, Scotland and Wales. We have worked with several different wind energy developers to provide advice on which potential wind turbine locations will need further targeted protected species surveys. These assessments play a crucial part in determining which sites progress, or are considered feasible, and which ones are likely to encounter significant ecological issues.
- Site assessment for a housing development in North Norfolk. We provided a detailed report at the initial stage, to inform the developer of which targeted protected species surveys were required.
