Phase 1 Habitat and NVC Surveys

Our ecologists have a wealth of in-house experience in conducting habitat and vegetation surveys throughout lowland and upland habitats in the UK. We have particular expertise in semi-natural lowland habitats and arable farmland. Members of our staff are highly experienced in NVC techniques and have botanical ID qualifications. We can offer proportionate  services to cater for any project.

Services

  • Phase 1 habitat survey: A Phase 1 habitat survey is undertaken to provide an area map with descriptive notes on any habitats of ecological importance. This also provides a baseline vegetation survey across the site, in which any rare plant species will be located. The results from this survey are used to determine the subsequent surveys that are required in relation to protected species, such as protected herpetofauna and mammals.  For wind farms, the survey also includes collection of detailed data on hedgerows to allow calculation of stand-off distances (see Hedgerow survey below). One of the outputs of this survey is an interim constraints map to feed into micrositing requirements for the proposal.
  • Hedgerow survey: we are experienced at determining important hedgerows under the Hedgerow Regulations, and providing appropriate advice.
  • NVC survey: The National Vegetation Classification (NVC) provides a common standard to which plant communities in Britain can be assessed. As such, NVC is a useful tool for assessing vegetation types on a site or as a basis for developing management plans.

Project Examples

  • Extensive Phase 1 habitat survey for a 45km cable route in Norfolk
  • NVC surveys for many Norfolk nature reserves, including Holme Dunes, Holt Lowes, Weeting Heath and Buxton Heath
  • Vegetated shingle surveys in Suffolk for the Environment Agency
  • Phase 1 habitat surveys for numerous smaller developments
  • NVC surveys at managed realignment sites in Norfolk and Essex, undertaken for the Environment Agency
  • Upland NVC at sites in the Borders and Yorkshire Dales
