Ptolemy joined WFE in January 2019 following a previous role as a ranger with the National Trust on the Farne Islands. He has a range of ornithological experience including previous seabird monitoring on the Farnes and Long Nanny Little Tern Site in Northumberland, plus time volunteering on the Isle of May.
While at WFE, Ptolemy has gained experience in a range of bird surveys including breeding and wintering bird surveys, vantage point and nesting bird checks. He has also led projects on assessing impacts of recreational disturbance to waterbirds and post-construction monitoring of windfarms.
Ptolemy also undertakes a range of other surveys including UK Habitat surveys and BNG condition assessments; as well as surveys for protected species such as great crested newts (for which he holds a ‘Level 1’ survey licence), reptiles and water voles. He is also working towards a natterjack toad licence.
